A traditional tea party was hosted by the Ladies’ Section on Wednesday 28th March in honour of Greta Watchorn and Di Ward. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the combined membership of more than 90 years. Both ladies joined in the 1970s, Greta in 1970 and Di in 1974. Di has been Lady President in her time and was also Ladies’ Captain in 1985. Both played many matches for the club, were avid golfers and they have witnessed a great change in the course.
The delicious spread in the clubhouse laid on by the catering staff included a range of sandwiches, home made quiches and an array of cupcakes and scones. We were fortunate to be waited on hand and foot not only by Angie, but also by Club Chairman Phil Millward, who had dressed up especially for the occasion. It was much appreciated by the ladies present.
Although Greta thoroughly enjoyed the whole occasion, sadly Di was unable to attend. Blame her dentist, who decided to extract a tooth that morning! However, it was lovely to see other previous stalwart members such as Shirley Booth (joined in 1979), Pat Skelton (joined in 1975) and Margaret Pedge (joined in 1967). We also had the pleasure of welcoming back Kullike Dempster after a long absence and she was very impressed with the clubhouse decoration. The visit brought back many happy memories for her.
Congratulations to Denise Waldron (after a last minute raffle purchase) for winning the cake very kindly donated by Ann Evans. Coals to Newcastle really!
Although Greta and Di have almost hung up their golf shoes, they hope to pop in for coffee and a chat on Wednesdays and a ‘quick’ few holes if they feel up to it! Being able to play well into your 80s and 90s is no mean feat and long may it continue.
