A Day to Remember at Melton Mowbray Golf Club

Where Tradition Took to the Skies and Sport United a Community

Melton Mowbray Golf Club has long been a cornerstone of the local sporting scene, but on Saturday the 13th of September 2025, it elevated itself to something even greater—a symbol of unity, heritage, and community spirit, to remember the Battle of Britain Anniversary, and support the annual Wings Appeal, on behalf of the Melton branch of the RAFA.

The annual golf competition, was a beloved fixture in the club’s calendar commencing in 1966, so in this special centenary year for the club it offered the unique opportunity to return this event to the club calendar.

The day was made all the more remarkable with the grateful assistance of the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight with an awe-inspiring flypast of the iconic Avro Lancaster bomber, followed by a MkXIX PM631 Spitfire painted in its blue livery exactly as it was in 1957, with its recognisable Griffon engine sound as it roared over the club house, a tribute that left spectators gazing skyward in admiration and reverence, as the Spitfire wing waved on its departure.

The competition itself was a masterclass in friendly rivalry. Players from the club brought their best swings, all vying not just to win the Wings Appeal Trophy, but for the shared joy of the game. The greens were pristine, the camaraderie palpable, and the weather—mercifully kind—seemed to smile upon the event. For many, it was less about winning and more about being part of a day that celebrated community, sport, and remembrance in equal measure.

Yet, it was the deep rumble of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines of the Lancaster and the growling sound of the Spitfires Griffon overhead that truly marked the occasion as unforgettable. As the Lancaster passed gracefully above the fairways, conversation ceased and golf clubs were briefly forgotten. All eyes turned skyward, reflecting on the legacy of those who served and the sacrifices that aircraft like the Lancaster represent. It was a moving tribute that added a sense of gravitas and history to an already meaningful event.

The flypast served as more than just a spectacle—it was a powerful reminder of Melton Mowbray’s ties to British aviation heritage and a testament to the importance of honouring our past even as we enjoy the pleasures of the present.

Events like this do not happen by accident. The club’s committee, volunteers, and supporters deserve every commendation for their meticulous planning and dedication. Their efforts ensured not only a seamless day of sport and remembrance but also reinforced the vital role local clubs play in weaving together the social fabric of our communities.

In a world that can often feel divided, the Melton Mowbray Golf Club offered a shining example of what can be achieved when tradition, sport, and community come together. It wasn’t just a golf competition. It was a day of pride—pride in our history, in our community, and in the enduring power of coming together.

Let’s hope this becomes a tradition for years to come, we raised over £100 for the Captains charity the “Wings Appeal” thank you to everyone who took part.
