With the nickname of Rain Man as a result of the torrential rain during his away day, Melton Club Captain Gerry Stephens was hoping for sunshine on his Captain’s Day on Saturday 29th June. Fortunately, the temperature soared as the day became the hottest day of the year so far. Some 137 golfers both men, women and juniors turned out to support the Captain on his special day and one of the most important days on his golfing calendar. The format of the day was a qualifier individual Stableford and a Road to Woodhall Spa (RWS) competition. The outcome was a nail biting affair for John Squires, who was the clubhouse leader for most of the day and he was to have a long wait to see if his very good score of 38 points would be sufficient to win. His score remained unbeaten until the very last three golfers came off the course and two of them returned with a score of 39 pts. There were prizes for 3 categories, longest drives and nearest the pins for both men and women. There was also a chipping and putting competition set up by the Club Professional, Tony Westwood.
The overall winner of the day was Danny Raven with 39 points winning On Count Back (ocb) from Chris Owen in 2nd place. The winners were as follows:
Division 1 Kris Owen 39 pts, Paul Hackett 37 pts, Steve Burton 35 pts ocb.
There was a twos sweep the biggest pot yet and many players received £30 plus.
