MMGC pair of Paul Gough and Mick Cavani took on Stoke Rochford’s father and son pairing of Chairman Adrian and Harry Stannard. Prior to and during the tee off both sides were subjected to torrential rain and high gusting wind, which was to test the standard of golf on both sides. After a few holes the rain subsided and the sun started to break through from about the 6th hole. However the high winds continued and the cold chill remained almost to the end of the match.
Stoke Rochford, the home side, took the lead winning the first 4 holes and were looking to run away with the match until Melton halved a few holes to stop the rot, before pulling back to just 2 down. Both Stoke players continued to play some steady golf and prevented Melton cutting the deficit even more until the 10th when Mick Cavani sank a 15 foot downhill putt to win the hole. Then, after alternate wins, Stoke turned the screw winning the 13th and 15th to go dormy 3.
The match was won 3 and 2 by Stoke on the 16th with an excellent 25 foot putt from just off the green by Harry Stannard to get a half with Melton being only 5 foot from the hole.
