Wednesday 2nd May saw the ladies play in the Winners’ Rosebowl (medal format). Only 6 ladies were drawn to play, as several ladies who qualified as trophy or medal winners from 2017 season were away or unable to play. No ladies opted for the alternate day.
The weather was shocking with constant rain in the morning which included some very heavy sporadic downpours. Four ladies went out in the morning and braved the weather which was also very cold. Two ladies N/R’d and came in after 11 holes during a particularly heavy downpour and no-one could blame them. Conditions were really unpleasant. The other two ladies finished their round in the continuing rain.
The final two ladies opted for an afternoon slot and were blessed with much drier conditions and sunshine – it really was a day of 2 halves. However, the course by then was very wet and the ground very soft indeed. All of the six ladies who played should be congratulated for going out to battle with the weather, especially those who played in the morning.
The overall winner was Sue Hitchman with a nett 86, with Elizabeth Clark as runner-up on countback from Julia Brown both with nett 87. An alternative competition available to all ladies not qualifying for the Winners Rosebowl was an 18 hole Stableford. Conditions were so horrid, all ladies opted not to play but to catch up with everyone over a coffee in the clubhouse, so no entrants but dry drinkers!
