On Sunday 13th September, 18 past Captains from all over Leicester and Rutland turned out for the President’s weekend away at the McDonald’s Portal Golf and Spa, Tarporley, Cheshire in support of President David Stott. The format for the weekend was a three ball betterball stableford.
With excellent sunny weather and a slight breeze, players set off on a course that penalised any wayward shots off the fairway. The highlight of the day was Gerry Stephens’ Eagle 2 on the Par 4 12th. The first day was won by the President’s team of David Stott (Hinckley), John Rawlins (Scraptoft) and Mungo Munro (Hinckley).with 80 pts. 2nd were the MMGC trio of Owen Cook, Gerry Stephens and Ian Soloway with 77 pts.
Day two again was played in very sunny weather on the Championship course, which presented a better test, with longer fairways and some very big greens. The winners were Alan Cropp (Hinckley), Phil Fricker (Lingdale) and Brian Cole (MMGC) with 74 pts. Again in the prizes were President David Stott, Gerry Stephens (MMGC) and John Holland (Kibworth) with 73 pts.
