The annual match between MMGC and the Tigers Past Players took place on Sunday 15th September. The match started under some cloudy conditions, but this soon cleared to provide sunshine with a slight welcome breeze. The Melton team was led out by Club Captain Gerry Stephens and the Tigers team by Phil Smith and the format as usual was a four ball better ball.
After an excellent post match meal the Tigers spokesman said: We had a splendid reception from the whole of MMGC and the hospitality wassecond to none in the halfway house with food provided by Chris Stephens, the Club Captain’s wife, Lady Captain Nancy Denny and Carol Solloway. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day which was took place with great camaraderie, as ever, in what turned out to be a win for Melton. The “Shot of the day” was Ray Needham (Tigers) a left handed golfer, when blocked out by a tree produced a right handed 7 iron from his bag to hit a superb straight shot towards the 2nd green.
Nearest the pin winners were: Club Captain Gerry Stephens Par 3 7th. Dick Smith (Tigers) Par 3 14th. The Past Players play a round-robin of Leicestershire Golf Clubs annually, including Melton, raising money for charity. The day also raised over £60 for the MMGC Captains’ charity.
