Melton Seniors just miss out in tight county match competition

Melton Seniors were drawn away to a strong Scraptoft team who finished runners up in the LRGU Seniors Team Competition last year.  We played and won our usual annual fixture the day before at Melton, but the home side changed their line up considerably for this match with a few single handicappers replacing their predecessors.

The format was a 5 pairs team playing in a fourball stableford betterball matchplay format (whatever that means) with a point being awarded for each winning pair after 18 holes.

Course conditions were excellent and a dry day ensued, albeit playing in a gusting wind. Melton started strongly with a win for Neil Farish and Ady Stokes by 5 points.  The second game was a classic with the Melton pair of Steve Harrison and Steve Martin 3 points down standing on the 17th tee.  Steve Harrison pitched in for an eagle on the 17th and Steve Martin chipped in for an eagle on the 18th to win their game by 2 points.

Hopes were thwarted in the final 3 games which Scraptoft won to claim the match 3 games to 2.  A really good effort from the team against a well established strong group from Scraptoft.

The match was followed up with a treat of home made steak and ale pie and apple crumble and custard.  The highlight of the day for some.
