On Sunday morning, Tim Mortimer (MMGC Greens Director) and Chris Owen competed in the final of the very prestigious Muir Cup, which is for players with handicaps between 1 and 16. With the course in excellent condition and greens running true, any spectators would surely be in for a golfing treat. Tim was up for it as he started with a few pars and a birdie 3 on the fourth. However, Chris whose form has been good over several weeks, did not take it lying down. he tried hard to pull it back, but after 8 holes, Tim had the bit between his teeth. The game started to sway his way and he led Chris 5 up at the turn. Needless to say, Chris tried his very best to reel Tim back, but to no avail.
The game was played with good banter and a friendship seen all throughout the golfing fraternity at Melton. Many congratulations to Tim – a worthy winner.
Similar to the Muir Cup and as prestigious, the Muir Plate is for players with handicaps from 17 to 28, played in the same knockout format and with as much enthusiasm. This final was hard fought out between Roger Alexander and David Taylor and could have gone either way, until Roger started to take the upper hand and maintained his advantage until the 18th.
