This is a newly reprised competition which was very well supported this year and we ended up playing on one of the most humid days of the year so far. Added to that, in the gentle breeze, the pollen was drifting off the pine trees in dusty clouds – not great for hay-fever sufferers. However, all in all the course continues to play extremely well and the balls are getting a lot of run, unless you decide to go the scenic route via the rough!
The scores on the day were quite varied with Bettyne Norton, John Squires and Tom Eadon winning with 76 points. Close runners-up were Jean Moulds, Brendan Boyce and Doug Woolley with 75 points.
John Squires had a superb eagle on the 15th giving his team 5 points. The 15th seems to have been a kind hole to the gents, as Brendan Boyce had a birdie there and another on 16th earning his team 8 points in two consecutive holes! Sam Wright birdied the 11th hole – the longest on the course at just over 500 yards – earning his team 4 well deserved points. The ladies played steady golf and all scored well for their teams.
Several players stayed on for lunch, inviting partners who hadn’t played, which was a pleasant way to end what had been a very enjoyable day.
