On Sunday 9th June, Melton Mowbray Golf Club hosted the 24th Annual Pork Pie Open which is generously sponsored by Dickinson and Morris. Over 200 players took part in the pairs better ball Stableford competition on a course that had been prepared superbly by the Greens’ Staff, both throughout the week before and very early in the morning before the first tee off at 7.26am.
The weather was, by chance, a small window of sunshine for most players although those playing in the afternoon had to endure a short, but sharp downpour which luckily passed over quickly. The scoring was high to be in the prizes, which ran all the way from 1st to 12th and also included nearest the pins on all the Par 3s and ‘Nearest the Pie’ on the 1st Fairway.
In 1st place with an excellent 44 points were Phil Curtis from MMGC and Steve Goddard now playing at Stanton on the Wolds. Runners up with 43 ocb were John Harvey and Ade Grant, both from MMGC, and in 3rd place also with 43 points were T Buxton and T Lee from Stanton on the Wolds. In 4th place were N Bell of Ullesthorpe and K Edgar of Beedles Lake with 42 points ocb.
Nearest the pin prizes of Mizuna Caps went to S Draisey, I Jarvis, B Rawlinson and G Kitchen and David Coleman was closest to the pie – baked by Dickinson and Morris’ own Stephen Hallam.
The event, as usual, was a huge success enabled by the hard work of all the volunteers in the Clubhouse, the kitchen and bar staff team and everyone who worked in the Halfway House to provide food and drink (and occasionally shelter) for the players. Thank you to them and especially to Dickinson and Morris and Stephen Hallam for being such generous sponsors.
