On Friday 7th Sept 30 golfers from MMGC, which included Club Professional Tony Westwood, ventured out to play in the Wider Cup (Melton’s format of the Ryder Cup). On the first day at Verulam GC, home of the Ryder Cup which was presented by the late Sam Ryder to the club, a draw was made to select the golfers to play for Captain Glenn Price’s Team versus the Vice Captain Gerry Stephens’ Team. This competition was started in 2015 by then Club Captain Brendon Boyce and since then the Vice Captain’s team has won every event.
On the first day the format, copying the Ryder Cup, was Betterball Match Play, which ended up as a very creditable half. The second day was staged at Hanbury Manor Golf Course in Herefordshire and the format was Foursomes, at which point Glenn’s team edged in front by 9 wins to 7.
So it would turn out to be a tense 3rd day at Brampton Park, Huntingdon and it was not a disappointment. The Captain’s team started to rack up the wins and by half way through left it difficult for the Vice Captain’s team to make any headway on them. The overall result was 18 1/2 to 13 1/2 to the Captain’s team. Throughout the weekend all the players were fined for any misdemeanours they carried out by Vice Captain Gerry Stephens acting as Mr Fines and they raised £220 pounds for Different Strokes, the Captain’s Charity. A thank you to the all who participated in the weekend and the Club Captain for organising the event and also the help from his Vice Captain Gerry Stephens, Club Professional Tony Westwood, A special mention also goes to Doug Woolley, as every year he undertakes to organise the format, team draw, scoring and recording of all results.
